In July Madalena celebrates its patron saint, Santa Maria Madalena, with several days of cultural and musical events. Coinciding with the Festival of Our Lady of Lourdes is the week-long Semana dos Baleeiros or Week of the ‘Whalers. This is celebrated every August in Lajes by a whaling boat regatta and with fado and other traditional music as well as modern concerts, an arts and crafts fair and other cultural events. Sao Roque celebrates Cais de Agosto at the end of July with music and guest bands, guided excursions on Pico Mountain, other guided walks, and exhibitions. Especially popular are the boat trips in restored whaleboats belonging to the São Roque yacht club. In the first or second week of September the Pico Wine Co-operative holds a grape festival with folk dancing and other events to celebrate the harvest.
